RELUCTANT SAGE

The lifeblood
beats
low throb
thum-thum-thum
like a sacred drum
communicative
speaking simple
but still
speaking.
Living.
His is racing.
Screaming.
And he’s clawing his eyelids
seeking splendor
and seething
because somehow
it ain’t in the same place
he left it
10 minutes before this one.
He’s hurting
but regrets
nothing
it’s just time to move on
to what’s next.
Yet
useful lessons
however simplistic
are so easy to miss
as the world has grown custom
to complex
and when one’s temple
is only death
there’s not much left
to worship.
He asks about
meaning
and perhaps if he seeks
diligently
deeply
maybe someday
there will be something
for finding
worth keeping
and at last
he’ll understand
calm down
come around
and cease to admire
worthless things.
